Hello Writers and Friends: |
|
Need a nudge? If you have yet to attend a writing conference, consider yourself nudged. There are conferences and events to fit every wallet, from a “meet the author” program at a local bookstore or library to a multi-day one with workshop, signings, and classes. I have to admit, I’m a conference “junkie.” I love to speak at them and attend them. Regardless of your level of writing experience, you will profit by attending these events, meeting and networking with other writers, and listening to how the pros got their start. Check the conferences listed on Writer’s Digest’s site, www.writersdigest.com. If you’d like to attend a conference where I’ll be teaching, visit my site. On September 1, I’m speaking at the San Diego Chapter of Sisters in Crime about brainstorming. Here’s information along with a $5 off coupon if you’d like to attend the event: On September 15, I’m giving a full-day workshop “Write Your Book in 20 Minutes” in Las Vegas, for Writerpreneur ™, http://www.writerpreneur.org. This is my very favorite program and there will be writing exercises and on the spot critiquing in a safe and energetic atmosphere. Fly into Vegas, attend the workshop, have some fun and get back to work on Monday. That’s a deal you’ll win. On October 19, I’ll be speaking at the Oaks at Ojai, a health spa in Ojai (pronounced O-hi), California. The writing workshop is free and open to the public. For overachievers and serious writers only, here’s an opportunity not to be missed. It’s called Critique Mania and available from the Whidbey Island Writers Association, www.writeonwhidbey.org. I’m honored to be a part of this event and will provide my services pro bono in order to support the magazine. More than 50 authors will critique writers' works and help raise funds for Soundings magazine, a soon-to-be launched Whidbey Island Writers Association publication. For only $20, you can have your work reviewed by a professional writer or editor. (Critiques usually range from $25 to $75.) In return, you'll receive a detailed critique of your manuscript, and Soundings will receive the proceeds. Anyone can submit material, but WIWA members have the advantage of choosing the author of their choice to review their work. Nonmembers' manuscripts will be assigned, by genre, to the first available author. Up to 700 words of prose or 30 lines of poetry may be submitted August 1 through August 31. Critiqued manuscripts will be returned by September 30. Take advantage of this opportunity to do something for yourself and support Soundings, WIWA's upcoming literary magazine. Could you please do me a favor? I’m putting together a list of the all-time favorite books on writing for writers. If there’s a book that motivated you, helped get your muse to produce, or lifted you out of nearly terminal writer’s block, will you please send me an email? Use “books for writers” in the subject line and address it to askeva@evashaw.com. Give me the title, ISBN, and let me know why you found it helpful. I can’t promise you fame or fortune, but you will be helping emerging writers. I’ll include the list, when it’s completed, in a newsletter, so you’ll profit too. Joe and I have a new family member, Miss Rosy McDogal-Shaw (we changed her AKC name during the “adoption” process). Rosy is an eight-year-old Welsh terrier, former champion and a total joy. Our morning five mile walk barely takes the edge off her energy. I hope when I’m eight, in dog years, I’ll be as spunky. When Rosy’s snuggling, which is half the time, we call her Rosy Girl. When she’s attempting to chase down squirrels (a fulltime job for a terrier), we call her The Bullet. Yep, she’s fast. I’ve put new photos of Rosy on the site to share her with you. Remember the two T’s: Tenacity and Timing. Fall is the prefect time to power up and get queries and proposals in the works. Great time to take another writing course, too. Vaya con Dios, Eva |
